Day 5 – The Voyage Home

Our last day of choir tour was our “fun day.”  We spent the day at World’s of Fun.  The fact that most of K.C. was still in school, it being a Wednesday, and the threat of rain scared off any would be crowd.  We practically had the whole park to ourselves.  Everyone was able to ride whatever they wanted, multiple times.  After enjoying a fun day in the park we got on the road home early.  I thank God that he protected us as we drove, because it was very windy and we ran into some heavy rain near Witchita.  We made it in about 9:00 p.m. to the delight of many a happy parent.  I am sorry we were unable to sing on Wednesday evening, but I look forward to sharing with everyone in worship this upcoming Sunday morning!  Thank you for following along on our adventures and thank you for praying for us.

Day 4 – Chilicothe & City Union Mission

Day four of choir tour started out early.  We got up, ate breakfast and headed out toward Chilicothe, MO at about 8:00 a.m.  Chilicothe is about an hour and fifteen minutes to the Northeast of Kansas City.  After driving through town we arrived at The Baptist Home.  We unloaded, set up our sound, warmed up and then sang for the residents.

After singing at the Baptist Home we loaded up and headed back to Kansas City where we spent the afternoon helping the City Union Mission Family Shelter get some tasks done.

Then we served a meal to the residents that were currently staying at the family shelter…all 92 of them.  After finishing our tasks and a long day I announced our surprise for the evening: a Kansas City Royals baseball game!

After the game it was back to the hotel for some much needed rest.

Choir Tour Day 3 – Almost World’s of Fun

Well…today started off with a bang.  You know, the kind of bang that comes on the heels of a large lightning strike near where you are sleeping.  So, after waiting out the storm for a little while we realized today might not be our day to go to World’s of Fun.  So, I got on the phone, changed our tickets to Wednesday and we tried to figure out other things to do.  First we got out and went to Chick-Fil-A for lunch, then headed down to the Crown Center in downtown K.C. to hang out for a bit.  I bought everyone tickets to see EPIC.  I think I might be the only person that thought it was a funny movie.  Not sure I’d call it epic.

After the movie we left the Crown Center, drove past the WWI memorial (thank you, Veterans) and circled around downtown K.C. a couple of time (we got turned around).  Then we drove out to Kansas City, KS and did a little shopping at the outlet mall LEGENDS.  Not sure it’s legendary.  There were several restaurants to choose from including The T-Rex Cafe, Arthur Bryant’s, and Chili’s.  Some of the girls went to T-Rex.  I went to Arthur Bryant’s and our boys went to Chili’s of all places (don’t they know we have one in Ponca?).

I will say this for our group: These kids are great!  They have maintained a rigid state of flexibility in all that’s come our way.  When they could have complained they didn’t.  I would take them anywhere.  Also, maybe it’s good we didn’t go to World’s of Fun today.  They will still have voices to sing tomorrow!

Pray for us tomorrow as we go to Chilicothe and sing at the Baptist Home.  Then we go back downtown to work at the City Union Mission.

P.S. – Home concert will be Sunday morning…not Wednesday.

Day 2 – Tower View Baptist & City Union Mission

After a good night’s sleep we all got around in time to enjoy a 7:00 breakfast!

Then it was off to Tower View Baptist Church!  We arrived there around 7:30 AM and had enough to warm up and run through a few songs before the first service started at 8:15.

After first service we enjoyed Sunday school with their youth group.  We played a quick game and then had a Bible study on leadership lessons from Joshua! Then it was back to sing for the 11:00 service.  After service we were treated to a Memorial Day picnic and then we headed back to our hotel for a little r&r before our evening activity.

After a much needed nap, we loaded up again and set out on the first of our two evenings we will be spending at the City Union Mission.  Tonight we helped serve the men from the  Christian Living Program (designed to help get them back on their feet).

After we served at the mission, we came back to our hotel and walked next door to…

Cracker Barrel!  Yum.

Tomorrow it’s off to World’s Of Fun (their reward for sticking with me all year)!

Day 1 – Travel

The youth choir got away from FBC Ponca around 3:40 PM on Saturday.  Joel and Patty Gilliland along with Emma Jones loaded up our eight students, sound equipment, and luggage and set out on the road to Kansas City.  Aaron and Katie left West Plains, Missouri around 4:00 PM after a few days of wedding mayhem (good mayhem).  Along the way the students stopped at Emporia, Kansas at a location that had a Taco Bell, McDonalds, Braum’s, Golden Corral and Starbucks.  After a good meal they reloaded the bus and got on their way to Kansas City.

As most of you know, it’s a pretty uneventful drive across Kansas.  Long and boring.  Well, it was boring until they group on the bus got closer to our hotel.  Patty was reading directions (which I printed out) to Joel and they turned the page over and a whole set was missing. (Thank you Google Maps).  So, after a wrong turn, they plugged our hotel into their GPS and made the right course correction.

Luckily, this allowed Katie and I just enough time to arrive at the hotel ahead of everyone and check us in!  Soon after we got there the choir arrived.  Then we passed out keys and headed to our rooms.  After a brief room check (with a complimentary chocolate chip cookie) we all went to bed early (10:00 PM) to prepare for the long day ahead.
